The founder of the modern Slovene professional theatre, Ignacij Borštnik (1858-1919), was born in this house.
It was built at the end of the 18th century by Ignacij’s grandfather. Members of the Borštnik family restored the cottage some years ago with their own funds. The house has retained many original features, such as wall paintings, carpentry and stoves. The life and work of Ignacij Borštnik is presented on the billboards. The memorial plaque and the bust are located on the facade of the house and in the memorial park.
In memory of Ignacij Borštnik, the Borštnik Ring has been awarded since 1970 as a Slovene award for acting achievements. Borštnik awards are given to the best actors and actresses and the most promising young actors and actresses.
