Jenko’s linden tree

I’m slightly out of breath. I could do with a drink. Shall we take a short break?

It’s quite pleasant here at Lipa.

The linden tree has a special meaning for Slovenes because people gathered under its canopy where they discussed important village matters, socialized and danced.

Listen to the story of Jenka's linden tree

Linden is one of the most powerful trees, as it grows up to 40 meters (130 feet) high, reaches a trunk diameter of up to 5 meters (16 feet), develops a mighty canopy and reaches an age of up to 500 years. It can be found in village squares, at inns, in farmyards and parks, where it provides shade with its mighty canopy. Today, linden honey and linden tea are popular among people.

The composer and conductor Davorin Jenko (1835-1914), the author of two anthems, ‘Forward, Flag of Glory!’ (the current anthem of the Slovene army) and the current national Serbian anthem ‘God of Justice’, was born under the linden tree in Dvorje.

He also composed a song “The Linden Tree Grows Green”, which became a national song.

Lipa zelenela je

Lipa zelenela je
tam v dišečem gaju,
s cvetjem me posipala,
d’jal sem, da sem v raju.
Veje rastezavala
k’ nebu je visoko,
meni pa je do srca
segala globoko.
