The most famous owner of the castle was the banker and industrialist Rado Hribar, who bought the castle in 1936. He was married to the extravagant Ksenija, who was a daughter of rich industrialists. Rado and Ksenija were a wealthy couple, highly educated, well-travelled, with a rich social life. They threw parties and hosted gatherings for high society at their castle. Ksenija even became the first female pilot in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. She stood out even more when she chose a crocodile as her pet, which she sometimes walked around Tivoli Park in Ljubljana.
Today, Strmol Castle serves as a protocol building of the Republic of Slovenia. In 2004, it was declared a cultural monument of national importance. It also houses a boutique 4* hotel.
