Strmol Castle

What a fantastic scene. What a lovely little lake, isn’t it? It would be interesting to know how the owners of the castle lived. Shall we take a closer look?

Strmol Castle was first mentioned in the 13th century. It was named after its owner, the knight Verijand Strmolski. The Strmolskis owned it until the 15th century, after which it changed owners several times.

Listen to the story of Strmol Castle

The most famous owner of the castle was the banker and industrialist Rado Hribar, who bought the castle in 1936. He was married to the extravagant Ksenija, who was a daughter of rich industrialists. Rado and Ksenija were a wealthy couple, highly educated, well-travelled, with a rich social life. They threw parties and hosted gatherings for high society at their castle. Ksenija even became the first female pilot in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. She stood out even more when she chose a crocodile as her pet, which she sometimes walked around Tivoli Park in Ljubljana.

Today, Strmol Castle serves as a protocol building of the Republic of Slovenia. In 2004, it was declared a cultural monument of national importance. It also houses a boutique 4* hotel.
