Cerklje Church

Now, we can walk to all the sights from the centre of the village.

Convenient, isn’t it?

According to folk tradition, the church was originally built on the spot where shepherds repeatedly found the image of the Virgin Mary. Today, the parish church of Mary’s Assumption is located in the centre of the village.

Listen to the story about the Cerklje church

The medieval church was destroyed by an earthquake in 1511. During the Turkish invasions, it was surrounded by a wall, which was demolished in the 19th century. The church was renovated in the Baroque period, and it houses works by prominent Slovene painters Layer (1752-1828), Stroj (1803-1871), Šubic (1854-1889), Tavčar (1820-1892) and Franke (1841-1927). The entrance porch was designed by Jože Plečnik.

A monument to the composer Davorin Jenko stands in front of the church.
